{"id":1016,"date":"2022-06-23T13:38:58","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T13:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.campariacademy.com\/es-ar\/?p=1016"},"modified":"2022-07-21T07:51:57","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T07:51:57","slug":"focus-on-inclusivity-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.campariacademy.com\/es-ar\/inspiracion\/focus-on-inclusivity-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"So Why Focus On Inclusivity, and Not Diversity?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The words <strong>\u201cdiversity\u201d and \u201cinclusivity\u201d<\/strong> are so often used together that it\u2019s an easy mistake to think they also mean the same \u2013or in fact are the same \u2013 when in reality they are two clearly defined subjects not interchangeable. But <strong>what is the difference?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with <strong>diversity<\/strong>, which you can say<strong> represents the \u201cwhat\u201d <\/strong>in this discussion. Most of us understand what diversity is on a superficial level; it is the characteristics and distinctions that identify us \u2013 and separate us &#8211; such as gender identity, age, nationality, ethnicity or sexual orientation \u2013 but <strong>on a deeper level<\/strong> it also includes socioeconomic background, religion and education, to name a few. At this point in time, I think most businesses would agree that <strong>having a diverse team is an asset<\/strong> \u2013 regardless of the motivation behind \u2013 and in best case studies, you\u2019ll often find that diverse workplaces are considered better to work for, enjoy higher staff retention and also higher revenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, because <strong>there is a but, and an important one, <\/strong>you can also have a workplace or an environment that is diverse, with a team from a wide array of backgrounds and experiences, and not reap any of those benefits \u2013 very often because there is no inclusivity. So what does that mean? <strong>Inclusivity is essentially the \u201chow\u201d in this equation.<\/strong> It\u2019s creating and nurturing an environment where people \u2013 regardless of differences and backgrounds \u2013 feel both welcomed and valued. It\u2019s about developing and accommodating the diverse group of individuals you now employ, encouraging and advancing them on equal terms and with the same opportunities. The tricky part can sometimes be that it also means to change old practices that unfairly benefit only some, or challenge unconscious biases that are inherent in all of us \u2013 because as we\u2019ve seen in the past \u2013<strong> it\u2019s perfectly possible to be inclusive but not diverse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campariacademy.com\/es-ar\/perspectives\/\">foster inclusivity<\/a>, <\/strong>it requires not only commitment &#8211; it also needs thoughtfulness, understanding and intent. Most importantly, it <strong>relies on empathy;<\/strong> the ability to understand someone else\u2019s point of view without the interference of your own. I think this is where the challenge lies for many of us \u2013 not because we don\u2019t want to be openminded and inclusive individuals \u2013 but  because <strong>our own insecurities often prevent us from asking for help <\/strong>when we come across topics or problems we don\u2019t fully understand. Especially with sensitive topics, which ironically, are the most important to discuss openly if we want to cultivate positive change. Understanding the distinction between diversity and inclusivity, is to understand the importance of both, and how they equally need our time and commitment. <strong>Being different is something we should celebrate,<\/strong> not feel intimidated by, and creating spaces that encourage this is not only important \u2013 it is the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On an individual level, it means <strong>being more self-aware of our own personal biases and keeping them in check<\/strong>. The realization that there are several ways to achieve something is an important lesson to learn, but it can also be a hard lesson to learn. <br>Progress often comes through trial and error, but in today\u2019s environment, that can sometimes be a rare luxury to come by.
